PROJECT DEVELOPMENT 2013 : LOCATED : SHAMBLES & INNER DOWSING
LAST STATION 2013
The project, led by artists Mary Hooper and Elise Liversedge, is inspired by the history and work of the manned Light Vessels stationed around the British Isles from 1732–1989. The project explores ideas of location and dislocation incorporating research into the history of the manned Light Vessels. This has resulted so far in two multi media site-specific installations at the Allsop Gallery, Bridport Art Centre, Bridport and in 2 empty shops in Church Street in Harwich, Essex.
Integral to the development of the LAST STATION installations throughout the first stage of the project are 3 new commissions, developed in collaboration with Mary & Elise during 2013:
‘The Light Vessel’ a new choral work by international composer and musician Trevor Watts with words by poet and novelist Kay Syrad. The work was premiered in December 2013 by the Harwich Sing community choir who worked closely with Trevor during its development, and will be performed again by Harwich Sing and other choirs in touring locations in 2014- 2015. A recording of this performance can be listened to on the LAST STATION soundcloud page.
‘1000 tasks’ by Kay Syrad, a text piece which focuses on the work of the Light Vessel Crews and transforms the everyday into a powerful list of tasks. The list is protected by a blue hard back cover and kept safe in its own red box. ‘laststation’ a smart phone app and website created as a tool for interacting with the work during the 2013 installations and to be used as part of the project’s touring programme for 2014-15.
